Several years ago, my friends Jessie, Emily and I were sharing our personal ghost stories over lunch. When I was 22 I had a serious operation and was on strong painkillers in the hospital in Salt Lake City. One night as I struggled to stay awake, I had a visitor in my room - the spirit of a recently deceased boy. He was bored with all the old dead people he was stuck with in the hospital and asked me if I wanted to spend the evening with him. I remember floating into the hallway outside my room and noticing how quiet it was, only a nurse or two sitting behind their station, taking no notice of us two spirits drifting by 6 feet off the ground. We ran into other floaters, too, mostly old people as I recall. We went downstairs to the main lobby of the hospital where a bunch of them were hanging out in front of the television, which was suspended high in the air - perfect for us phantoms. After what seemed like hours of pointless television, (even more pointless when you consider the circumstances) we returned to my room and I remember staring down at my body and then grabbing onto my hands in a panic. My feet were being pulled away but I wanted to hold on. I was screaming, my hands clenched to the bedrail when the nurse came running in, early the next day. For years after that I had terrible dreams that something was crouched on my chest, trying to steal the breath out of me. This song came out of that recollection and other near-
misses in my life, of which there have been quite a few.
lyrics
SIX HOURS INTO THE WOODS
Six hours into the woods I’m floating away
I didn’t know if to go, didn’t know if to stay
Look around there’s only me with all these ghosts
They’re hiding high up in the trees, I feel exposed
Ave Maria
I’m out here in the dark, I really need your love
Ave Maria
Six hours into the woods I didn’t get it right
Seemed like nothing but time - now I’m losing light
Miles to go and I can’t even read the signs
Ill prepared and under-dressed, I’m in a bind
Ave Maria
I’m out here in the dark, I really need your love
Ave Maria
Six hours into the woods I’m all turned around
Once I knew what was up now I’m losing ground
Catch my breath it’s like I never learned a thing
All my life just been existing in a dream
Ave Maria
I’m out here in the dark, I really need your love
Ave Maria
I’m out here in the cold, I really need your love
