By the end of December, 2008, I had already partially recorded almost all the songs on this album. As I sat listening to the rough mixes I thought – damn, this is a melancholy body of work, I better write myself a rocker. I sat down at the piano, but instead of producing the song I thought I needed, this dark little piece came out in one of those seamless streams of words and music where you know the thing has just been sitting there waiting for you to give it voice. Written during our country’s most paralyzed moment, between one president going out and another waiting to come in, it was a somber December and the decades-long-mindless-consumption-party-we-thought-would-never-end had definitely ended.
It was clear to me that after all, this song was exactly what the album needed.
lyrics
THESE DARKENED DAYS
We got everything we wanted
but what we wanted was all wrong
The goods of sacrifice were flaunted
and now we’re haunted by what was lost
Oh, by what was lost
I’ve heard it said these skies were blue once
and full of nuance, instead of gray
And in the night the stars were thousands,
they could arouse us to sing their praise
Oh, to sing their praise
We were given so much power
but we devour, and we betray
And where is God among these lions,
these screaming sirens, these darkened days?
Where is God among these lions,
these screaming sirens, these darkened days?
Oh, these darkened days.
