January 1, 2006. I woke up with a not very good feeling about the future and didn’t really understand why the sadness had settled in so hard and fast. I started working on this song, the repetitive, droning left hand going as I stared out my bedroom window where the barren branches of a (?) reminded me of all that wasn’t there anymore, and in my head the words ‘gone, gone, gone away’ kept repeating. But there wasn’t a real song yet. A few hours later, I got a phone call from my mother telling me that Jane, the 29 year old daughter of some of our family’s dearest friends had fallen down the stairs the night before, on New Years Eve. Although her body survived for some days after that, the fall had essentially killed her instantly. I knew that the song was hers. To me, Jane was like a bird, always moving, quick, fragile, alive and then gone.
Time, you tease, you lead astray
Winter freeze, winter decay
Morning gray I lie here, morning gray
Words don’t flow like water, gone
Turned to snow, can’t find a song
Morning gray I lie here, morning gray
Bird, you’re gone, gone, gone away
Bird, your song gone, gone away
